Uruma is a Swahili word which means compassion or mercy.
Uruma Children Foundation was started by Mr Roger Zihalirwa Kayabu a Congolese national born on 28th May 1990, in Uvira. This he founded upon experiencing turmoil during the internal conflicts in the Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo which didn’t give him a chance to complete his study in law at the Catholic University of Bukavu ( UCB). These conflicts left many families displaced while others saw their dear ones lose lives. As a result of this troubling experience, Roger started on the project of hope amidst the chaos. Initially, he gathered several children in his father’s compound to preach to them the good news of hope. Thereafter, Roger realized that music was a perfect way to heal the children. Upon arriving in Uganda as a refugee, he expanded his vision by starting up Uruma Children Foundation in 2017 after he heard a voice of the Lord speaking to him in a dream :” … Roger go, start a project that helps the vulnerable persons, do not worry about money and equipment, l the Lord will provide..!”
Roger was inspired by a bible scripture of JAMES 1:27 that says ” Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
A few days later, Roger shared to people around him his vision to create Uruma by making a community call for everyone to support this vision.
